1539 – Fall Planting of Sod   arrow

Sod of cool-season turf speciessodding a lawn can be planted as long as the soil is not frozen. Sod planted late in the fall must be irrigated during the winter to prevent drying since it has little time in the fall to develop a substantial root system. Adequate winter watering will maintain moisture in the sod and underlying soil. Winter water only when conditions allow water to infiltrate the sod and soil. Apply only enough water so that puddling (and ice) does not form on the turf surface. This may mean watering every 2-3 weeks during an especially dry winter.
