1343 – Kalanchoe   arrow

Kalanchoe is a member of the stonecrop family and is native to Madagascar. It grows into upright shrubs in its native habitat.

Kalanchoes are known for their waxy, thick, dark green leaves. They have orange, yellow, pink or red flowers and need bright light and cool conditions to grow well. A potting mix that drains well, moderate waterings and time for the potting mix to dry out between watering also are important.

Fertilize kalanchoes every few months with a half-strength solution of an all-purpose, water-soluble fertilizer. Kalanchoes are widely available in Colorado and make nice flowering plants for the home and provide color during the winter months. Kalanchoes on a deck during the summer are an attractive part of a patio container display; however, they are challenging to get to re-bloom. Many people discard the plant following bloom; instead simply cut off the flowering head, let the plant rest with reduced water, and resume normal care. It should flower naturally in the spring.
