What are anemone?
Anemones, or windflowers, are some of the first plants to bloom in the spring and last to bloom in the fall. This versatile group of plants includes small plants suitable for rock gardens and large plants ideal for flower borders. Flower colors range from blue to white and pink.
When do these plants bloom?
Grecian wallflower is an early spring bloomer. Plants grow three to six inches tall and the flower colors of this species range from a sky blue to red, white and pink. Grecian wallflower is excellent for naturalizing an area and for rock gardens. Plant in sandy soil that drains well and in full sun. Allow the ground to dry between watering after this species flowers. They are hardy to USDA zone 4 and tubers are best planted in the fall.
Japanese anemone blooms in fall on two to four foot-tall plants. The flowers are two to three inches across, white or pink, and bloom on branching stems that rise above the foliage. They are hardy to USDA zone 4 and can be divided or transplanted in the spring or fall. Japanese anemone and its hybrids make excellent plants for flower borders. They will complement many late summer and fall blooming sedums, asters and chrysanthemums.
